Road Redemption Torrent lets you play with up to four friends on one screen, but if you don’t have a big TV, the picture might not be clear. Even hitting your friend with a hammer can stop being fun because some parts of the game don’t work as well when you’re playing together. For example, when you’re alone, if you catch up to another biker, you automatically go at the same speed until you beat them or move away. This makes fights happen more often and makes the game more enjoyable. But in multiplayer, especially with three or more players, this feature doesn’t seem to work well.
When I played with my friends, I often ended up far ahead, leaving nothing for the person in the last place to do. Meanwhile, those in the middle were overwhelmed with enemies. The same thing happened when I was in the first place – all the action was too far ahead, and I missed the feature that keeps the game close when you’re alone. When you do manage to stay close to your friends, it’s chaotic and fun, but like when you’re alone, hitting each other gets old quickly.
Fighting other bikers with weapons like wrenches and swords is easy and fun. One button attacks on the left, one on the right, another block, and one kicks whoever’s closest. Even though it seems simple, fighting can be hard because there are lots of weapons to use, like explosives and guns. You also need to use different tactics to beat each type of enemy. For example, you have to knock off a biker’s helmet before you can decapitate them with a sword. Sometimes you have to defeat certain enemies to get health or fuel, which adds some strategy, especially in short races.
Levels give you different goals, like finishing in the top three or just finishing at all. If you don’t complete these goals, you lose some rewards and your stats go down a bit, but the game doesn’t end. You can make up for it by spending money you earned in races and fights at the end of the level. But things are a bit too expensive, so you might have to race a few times without any upgrades.
If you’ve played Road Rash before, you’ll understand how to play Road Redemption Torrent quickly. Race, complete the goals if you can, and fight other bikers along the way. You earn money and boost/health by taking down anyone in your way. Most of the enemies are easy to beat, but there are tougher gangs too. Road Redemption’s fighting was fun for a while, but it didn’t keep me interested for the whole 13 hours I played, and I’m not sure if adding more to do would change that.
