At least they fight just as hard with each other, which sometimes lets you pass multiple cars after crashes. Crashes look awesome too, with pieces of the car flying across the track. They look so good that it’s possible to enjoy a bit of hostility from your rivals now and then.

Career mode is the main single-player challenge in NFS Shift 2. You start in basic racing with slow cars, aiming to earn enough experience and money to reach the top. In this game, the top is the official FIA GT3 and GT1 Championships. You don’t get every car and track from these real-life series and there’s no pit-stop system; so, official championships add some credibility to the game, but they’re not as realistic as you might want. Despite this, the Career mode offers enough variety and rewards to keep you interested throughout. Each new type of racing is introduced with videos of real drivers explaining the rules, tracks, and types of cars available.

Need For Speed Shift 2 Unleashed Torrent is an intense and immersive racer that recreates the driving experience like no other game on the market. In doing so, it builds well on the first Shift’s base, benefiting from Slightly Mad Studios’ more polished work and the inclusion of Autolog, but its handling is still too loose and its improvements too small for it to truly beat Gran Turismo and Forza – although it does enough to make sure it’s getting closer and closer.
