In NBA 2K24 Torrent, the staples of MyCareer, MyTeam, and MyNBA make a return, and even last year’s Jordan Challenge gets a pseudo-sequel in Mamba Moments, shifting the focus from the GOAT to Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. However, Mamba Moments ends up illustrating some of 2K24’s challenges: It’s noticeably less captivating and less intricate than its predecessor. Perhaps some of this is attributed to the fact that Bryant’s career accomplishments can’t quite measure up to Jordan’s, so the metaphorical ceiling for a mode that allows you to reenact some of his greatest career moments isn’t as enthralling.
Nevertheless, Mamba Moments lacks some of the attention and dedication this studio typically invests in its new features. Unlike Jordan Challenge, Mamba Moments excludes interview segments with players, coaches, and broadcasters who played pivotal roles in each chapter of the Jordan Challenge’s narrative. Bryant’s legacy mode doesn’t receive the same documentary-style treatment, and only about half as many games—seven—are playable this time.
This makes it a shorter and less comprehensive mode, though other enjoyable details like era-appropriate presentation and well-researched in-game commentary persist. I was impressed when the color commentators started discussing a travel delay the Lakers experienced due to inclement weather some 20 years ago. As always, this studio has done its homework, and it’s evident.
In MyNBA, the changes are similarly more modest after last year’s significant leap. NBA 2K24 Torrent introduced Eras, the ability to start a franchise in previous decades with accurate rosters, rulebooks, and visual filters. NBA 2K24 reintroduces this hopefully permanent element but only adds one new starting point: the LeBron Era, which highlights the emergence of NBA superteams like the Miami Heat and those that followed in the years since. While it’s a worthwhile addition, it doesn’t have the same impact as last year’s substantial introduction of the concept.
To be fair, the effort put into the Eras feature is distinctive to this series and clearly a meticulous process, ultimately providing a rewarding experience for players. However, there may be no other direction to take with the idea, which seems accurate for the best-in-class presentation. NBA 2K has consistently resembled a real NBA game in both look and sound in a way that no other sports sim quite achieves. The commentary is lively and diverse, featuring multiple commentary booths, ensuring different voices are heard across various games.
The highlight reels, stadium atmospheres, and genuinely amusing halftime shows are all noteworthy, even though the series may seem to have reached its peak in this aspect. It is an impressively accurate simulation of how basketball is presented on television, and it’s easy to overlook its approach when compared to other sports games. It’s only when I switch to other sports games that I truly appreciate how effectively this studio replicates live basketball.
