Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Torrent is an action shooter game developed by Treyarch and published by Activision. The Cold War is theatrical. From the ’80s-themed montage that kicks off the campaign to a Vietnam flashback set to Steppenwolf—along with plenty of explosions, helicopter crashes, and slo-mo shootouts—the Cold War campaign is as action-packed as you’d expect. It seamlessly embraces the inherent over-the-top nature of a Black Ops narrative, and while some elements may lean towards the goofy side, it’s both effortless and enjoyable to immerse yourself in the spy drama and intense gunfights in equal measure.

This is partly attributed to the well-executed comedic timing in the dialogue, preventing most scenes from appearing excessively self-serious. Throughout the campaign, you have numerous choices at your disposal, including optional side missions, decisions on whether to eliminate or apprehend specific antagonists and a range of dialogue options from lawful good to cheeky to loose cannon. While the majority of choices don’t significantly impact the overarching story, experimenting with them and revisiting previous levels to explore more chaotic options, like tossing an enemy spy off a building instead of capturing them, adds an extra layer of enjoyment.

Most levels provide multiple avenues for approaching combat, and some even accommodate for mistakes on your part. For instance, in an early mission where the objective is to assassinate a target before he boards a plane, you’re destined to mess up the assassination regardless. The illusion of flexibility, however, contributes to the dynamic and exhilarating nature of Cold War’s campaign, creating the sensation that you’re narrowly escaping the consequences of your daring escapades.

The level design adheres to the COD standard, featuring clear objectives and explosive set pieces. Hidden intel and occasional optional objectives add variety and incentive to explore well-realized settings like East Berlin or a clever Soviet training facility. One particular level, though, stands out as a showcase for both stealth and freedom of choice, allowing you unrestricted access inside a KGB building with multiple options for completing your objective. I invested more time in this mission than any other, thoroughly exploring the possibilities and infiltrating restricted areas just to uncover what lay behind each door.

Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Torrent largely sidesteps specific real-life events in its missions and overall narrative—at least to the best of my knowledge. Instead, it employs the backdrop of the Cold War and the Iran hostage crisis to establish a sense of place and a primary conflict. A peculiar intrusion of reality occurs with the inclusion of Ronald Reagan, who only makes a brief appearance at the beginning and through a few voice lines toward the game’s conclusion.

While the recreation of his likeness and manner of speech is undoubtedly impressive—a technical achievement, to be sure—he comes off as an oddly benign grandfather in a room full of tough-talking, chain-smoking individuals discussing illicit military operations.
